SEO for Charities
Most webmasters and search engine optimizers would believe that doing internet marketing and SEO for a nonprofit or a charity would be the same as any other client, and for the most part they would be correct. The site needs to be aged, have a lot of content, fresh updates, proper on-page SEO, and have a lot of strong and relevant backlinks. One key thing that a lot of SEO firms overlook is the people-oriented side of things on the hunt for strong backlinks.
Anyone that has ever done SEO for industries like pharmaceuticals, gambling, or warez knows that links are a lot harder to come by because webmasters for other sites do not want to link to these types of sites for fear of getting penalties for linking to bad neighborhoods. This in turn leads these types of industries to need to go out and fetch links in a more grey/blackhat manner generally.
Well, with charities the effect is quite the opposite and compounded. People love charities and nonprofit organizations much more than general business and ecommerce websites, so they are much more obliged to link to them. I have seen countless organizations such as United Way leverage their strong interpersonal relationships with webmasters to build up their backlink portfolio. To use Ghandi’s famous quote, “if you don’t ask, you don’t get” applies directly to charities looking to grow their search engine rankings. They have tons of fan sites and tons of supporters who have blogs and websites of their own, and if they are donating to your cause then a majority of them certainly would have no problem sending you a little link love as well if you ask for it.

Keeping up with the search engines
Ever since Google started growing around the turn of the millennium, they have been updating their algorithms and hardware to give their users the best experience possible. On the opposite side of that, spammers have been constantly finding new ways to abuse the system to rank for very competitive terms that send a lot of traffic that they can capitalize in.
The battle has been a constant back and forth, much like the arms race in the cold war. In today’s day and age, Google has done a very impressive job of weeding out the nasty sites and promoting ones that focus on solid content that people searching for information would be happy to stumble upon.
Google’s most recent algorithm update is called Google Panda 2.2, and it smashed tons of sketchy websites off the face of the internet because they were doing shady techniques that promoted the homepage to rank for a plethora of keywords. Google realized that legitimate sites have dozens to hundreds of thousands of pages rather than just one, so they really gave bonuses to sites that have tons of indexed pages. You can check how many pages your site has indexed by typing site:yoursite.com into Google.
With all that being said, I highly recommend you start promoting links to your inner pages, rather than the age-old technique of purely promoting the homepage and letting the traffic trickle down the line, as this idea doesn’t do as much as it use to. It is not the year 2000 anymore, so you need to keep up to date on 2011 link building strategies if you want to compete! Promoting inner pages can increase your longtail traffic an immense amount, and in my personal workings of being an SEO, I have noticed it has increased search terms for the homepage when I had slowed down the link building for those terms to focus on longtail.

What SEO Can do for your Business

Companies that rely on e-commerce understand the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). What they might not realize is that, based on the type of products or services they offer, they may not have the right kind of SEO. Keywords and back-links have become more important than ever as more and more businesses (read: Your competitors) have come online. There’s more to the game than simply getting your website to ride atop the digital waves generated by the various search engines.
A Double-Edged Sword
Optimization is a double-edged sword. Posting informative articles on your website, laced with the pertinent keywords, represents a kind of marketing technique that will get your website to bob to the top of the page. It also tells your prospective clients that your company really knows its stuff. However, just as a rising tide lifts all boats, others in your chosen field (that use similar techniques) could appear alongside your website – or even above it.
Puzzle Pieces
When it comes to your website, it is often the level of innovation where development and design are concerned that can separate your “digital billboard” from everyone else’s. It’s not enough to simply paint a sign on the side of a barn in hopes that cars driving by on the information superhighway will take notice. Staying on top of the fluid trends that influence the Internet is a crucial business activity that, like a shark, has to stay in constant motion in order to survive. Slowing down is not an option if you want your website to operate at peak performance.
Link-building is the final key to Search Engine Optimization. Without links from other sites, you are relying solely on the luck of the draw (however buoyant your site may be due to your careful keyword analysis) to pull in online traffic. When others find your site while navigating from others, it tells them that they’ve gone down the right path. The rest is up to your style and content. All the pieces of the puzzle have to fit together, otherwise SEO can only take you so far.
Developing a good business plan template is an important first step.

Privacy Versus Protection – An Easy Call
Any concerned parent would want to consider installing spy software on their family computer, or on their children’s computers if they have their own, as a precaution against any number of transgressions that the kids might perpetrate – or that someone may try to perpetrate against them. The hump that most Moms and Dads have to get over is the idea that they are breaching some kind of sacred trust they have with their offspring.
Keeping A Digital Eye on Them
If they are under any such illusions, they might want to watch the nightly news sometime, because online predators are a real threat. They will be out there in cyberspace today, tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year – as will your children. So, setting aside the idea that you are invading your child’s privacy (which is exactly what you’re doing when you install spy software), parents need to decide which is their best software option.
Not Necessarily a “Black-Bag Job”
In today’s economy, it would be understandable if a parent went with the free-download route, as many spyware packages are available online free of charge. However, spending a little money on something as important as spy software could eliminate future furrows in the brow. Top spy software can be downloaded remotely onto the desired computer. You don’t even have to play secret agent to get to your children’s hard drives and to trace their online journeys.
Higher-end programs can also allow the user to remotely shut down, restart, reboot or freeze the subject computer, or to log the user off with no more time or trouble than the click of a mouse. Will this make your kids wear jerseys with your name on the back of it? Probably not, but it very well may insure that they grow up to an age when they will be able to look back and appreciate the protections that you afforded them before they were old enough to know better.
