Kaboom! Google Bomb Still Works

In early 2007 Google made changes designed to prevent Google Bombs from working. A Google Bomb is an abundance of anchor text links pushing a message unrelated to the web site’s actual content. Past Google Bombs have included the searches: “more evil than Satan himself” which brought up the homepage for Microsoft. “miserable failure” or “failure” bought up the official George W. Bush biography. “liar” leading to Tony Blair.

And now, “Dangerous Cult” is returning The Church of Scientology as the #1 result.

The Google Bomb is a clear example of what Google measures to rank web sites.

It’s unlikely that The Church of Scientology has pages optimized for “Dangerous Cult”, and yet, they are ranking #1 for this term today. Someone (the group known as Anonymous) has created a large number of anchor text links and pointed them at Scientology.org.

On the page itself, there is no mention of “Dangerous Cult”. However, the word “Dangerous” is on the page. “Cult” is not. Google’s algorithm decided the incoming links justified placing Scientology.org in the #1 spot. It appears anchor text not only outweighs content, but can still take the place of it!

    I just read about Anonymous in Maxim. Scientologist and Anonymous are at war. Someone’s cat from Anonymous turned up missing and it’s looking like the Scientologists are to blame.
