Google doesn't want anyone to understand much about PageRank (the name of the search algorithm). Those that try to 'beat' Google are sure to find themselves on the losing end of rankings. They might get away with it briefly, but any success is short lived.

Our philosophy is to create relevance. The search engines WANT to deliver visitors to your site. IF your site is exactly what visitors are looking for. It's good for you, it's good for the search engines, and it's good for your visitors. Deliver useful, relevant content. Once you have content, then (and only then) should you use every means possible to make everyone aware of your site. Yes, it still takes effort -- but at least now, the search engines are happy to let you move up the rankings.
