There is a ton of misinformation on the web about which SEO techniques work and which don’t. As always, you should read with caution and test for yourself.

The #1 rule for on-site is SEO is relevance. Make sure that the site or page you are trying to rank is relevant and useful for the visitors that click on your primary keyword. A clean, straight to the point site will be appreciated by your visitors. Use custom web design techniques which enhance the subject matter, don’t go over-the-top with flash, moving graphics, or anything distracting.

Start at the top. The title of your page should feature your primary keywords and tell visitors and search engines what the focus of your page/site is. Once you have attracted traffic to your site, they should instantly be able to see content which directly addresses the keywords you’ve placed in your title. Article, video, or post headers should feature the keywords.

You can’t cram a ton of info onto your homepage, so include excepts with links to back pages that expand on the subject matter of the keywords. According to Web Design Richmond you should keep the focus of the page simple and concise. Function over form.

You want to make your site as clean and crisp as possible. Even though most people have fast connections such as cable or satellite internet you don’t want to miss out on vital new consumers that are still kick’n it old school with dial-up.

Finally, make sure your link structure is easy to follow and intutive for finding information on your site.

For most legitimate web sites, the above steps will be all the on-site SEO necessary. If you have a particularly large site, consider a site map. For most though, they are unnecessary. Keep it simple, stay focused, and above all – be useful!

Bing is new, new stuff looks shiny for a while.

Google is used as a verb instead of ’searching’. Bing/Yahoo have a long way to go before they steal permanent market share. At this point I suspect Microsoft will shovel money into marketing for the next few years with no hope of generating anything close to a profit. They have a big stockpile of money, but at some point shareholders will complain. When the marketing ends, their product better deliver results as good or better than Google. I doubt that will be the case.

The search algorithm seems fairly straight forward for Bing. Unfortunately big company sites with huge budgets and blackhat auto link techniques will be more effective on Bing than Google.

My prediction: the simple nature of the search algorithm used by Bing will be either exploited and results will look like your email spam folder, or they will look like Forbes 500 list — neither is as useful as Google’s results.

It has been of my own experience, when you ask most companies which main keywords they are going to be targeting for their new flagship startup company, they will tell you that they want to rank for very competitive keywords in an unbelievable time frame. While yes it is true that ranking for mortgage, debt, dating, or banking will bring you a plethora of high quality traffic that will convert into leads and sales, getting those rankings without years of work or lots of money is impossible.

Most search engine optimizers do not realize there is a better solution. All you need to do is to start thinking big by targeting small. It does not matter what niche your company or website is in, every single niche has a more targeted keyword that you can be targeting. You will be able to rank higher for this keyword, in a shorter time frame. When you start ranking for this niche keyword, you will start receiving a representative sample of the traffic you will be seeing for the big keyword you are targeting for the long term. You will be able to build up sales, leads, customer contact information, and most importantly cash while you are slowly building up to your long term keyword goal. It is often easier to rank for the number one spot for five to ten niche keywords with a high volume traffic than it is to rank for one mega keyword as it is often called. For those of you who learn by example, imagine you own an affiliate company that sells supplements. Ranking for for a term like weight loss will result in potentially hundreds of thousands of sales because so many people search for it every day, however the traffic is only semi targeted. Instead of trying to target a term like weight loss, a company that sells bottles containing maqui berry could target a term like weight loss pills, which is a slightly more targeted and less competitive keyword. Depending on the size and competition of the niche, you could keep going smaller and smaller in your niche search. Instead of targeting weight loss pills, you could target a very longtail term like how to lose weight fast. The more longtail and smaller the niche, the faster you will be able to rank. You can then easily rank number one for a niche term which you can then shift the focus to a bigger keyword, ultimately moving closer and closer to ranking for your ultimate keyword in the long term. If its going to take two years to rank for a term like weight loss which will let your company make ten thousand dollars per day… wouldn’t it be smarter to rank for ten niche keywords earning you a thousand dollars a day and then have an entire year of that to rank for your big term and have the benefits of 11 income earning keywords, 10 of which have been earning you money every day for an entire year? I think you are finally now seeing the benefits of targeting small, so go out and search google for your favorite keyword tool and start doing keyword research to find the niches you can rank for in a lot shorter timeframe than trying to stick it out with your main keyword.

‘Ethical SEO’ is not a typo for a CEO who is acting ethically in business. If you are well-versed in today’s technology, you will know that SEO is short for search engine optimization. When you add the word “ethical” in front of SEO, you are simply explaining a way to optimize your search engine without spammy tactics and other worries. If you use ethical SEO, you have to do the right thing every day in optimizing your content – no shortcuts, no cheating. In other words, use what you can to maximize your chances of getting people to your site and getting them to buy your products or services without guerilla marketing tactics, spamming their email boxes, annoying pop-up ads, ‘keywords’ that lead to a lot of garbage advertising, and the purchase of links.

Sometimes it’s difficult to be ethical, especially when your competitors often are not. Often the temptation to take the easy way out is there. However, it is possible to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of any site using ethical SEO. The good thing about an ethical SEO agency is that they will avoid trickery and always choose to act responsibly in an effort to get optimal results for the Website. In doing that, they will be able to make the site work for you. No matter whether you do your own SEO or hire someone, always choose to be ethical. It really is possible to succeed that way.

If you’re going to do work on the Internet or if you have a blog or a website, you want people to be able to find you. In order for them to do that, your site has to appear in the search engine rankings. This doesn’t happen automatically. You have to have terms on your site that the person looking for what you have to offer will be searching under.

Internet, Internet service, and Internet provider are some of the most popular terms for people who do business on the web, but there are many other popular terms, depending on what field you are in. If you have something to sell, using the item that you’re selling and ’sell’ or ‘buy’ or ‘price’ might be a great way to bring traffic to your site.

There are ways that you can find out what the most popular terms are for your industry, and that will help you bring more visitors to your site, as well. Just make sure that you give them a reason to stay around and buy your products or services once they get there, or having good search terms might not lead to the desired increase in sales.

A redirect may seem pretty straightforward, but you do need to understand that there are different kinds. Knowing that, means knowing which one to use in what circumstance. For example, you might buy several domain names because they are keyword rich and will help your business. By doing that, you can set all of them up to point (or redirect) to one site, and you won’t actually have multiple Web sites out there to maintain.

A 301 redirect is the one to use. This is the redirect code for something that is ‘permanently moved.’ It’s the only one that Google and other search engines accept completely and it won’t get you banned or penalized. If you use a 302 redirect, for ‘temporarily moved’ and you leave it there forever, you can be penalized by the search engines, which will certainly harm your business.

This didn’t used to be problem, but there is a lot more sensitivity in what the search engines look for today, and now a lot of 302 redirects that were fine before are causing many businesses headaches that they don’t need.

If you’ve been asked to write a proposal for a customer to consider and you’re trying to get that business to use you for SEO services, you have to do your research.

Once the customer gets a clear understanding of what SEO is and what it isn’t, you can start doing your research, but educating the customer should be your first priority. The research that you’ll do after that has to do with the fact that each and every business is unique. As you research the business and draft the proposal consider the project objective, the goals that the customer has, the strategies that you’ll be using, and the target audience. Those are all very important.

You’ll also want to include keyword and competitor research, an assignment of responsibilities, and any additional research requirements that you may have. Then give them an overview at the end so that everything you’ve just talked about is summed up nicely and they can see how it will greatly benefit their business.

Sure, it takes some work. If you need and want their business, though, you’ll take the time to write the perfect proposal.

It might seem absolutely crazy, but the demand for SEO is growing and growing. Even with the struggling economy, there are more people in need of optimizing their web sites. When you think about it carefully, it might not be that crazy after all.

People need to bring traffic to their web sites if they’re going to survive in this economy, and one of the best and least expensive ways to do that is through SEO. When you look at the return on investment that you get from good SEO, it’s almost like free advertising, and there are a lot of people out there who can create SEO content for you. In the past these people, were somewhat looked down on and they definitely weren’t taking seriously, but they are starting to be seen as more important and more valuable now.

The SEO bubble keeps getting bigger. It might pop one day like the dotcom bubble, but it doesn’t seem likely. It’s based on different things and businesses always need advertising. If they can get it for almost free on a global medium like the Internet, why would they do anything else?

That might seem like a strange question in the SEO world, but it’s important, if you remember this: good guys wear white hats, and bad guys wear black hats.

There is a phrase in the SEO world called black-hat SEO. That means that you’re spamming the search engines and pushing against every boundary you can find to try to increase rankings and bring interest to your site. A lot of people do it, but it doesn’t work for everyone and it’s certainly not the ethical way to do things.

You need to practice something closer to white-hat SEO, which means that you do things the way the search engines ask you to. You follow their guidelines and you pay attention to what they ask of you so that your site is optimized the way that the search engines want it to be – the ethical way. If you’re too purist, however, you might lose out because there are a lot of people out there who aren’t purists.

You’ll find that the best SEO professionals often wear grey hats instead. They stay within the ‘law’ but they know when to push against a few boundaries.

Most people already understand how important SEO is to any business, but that doesn’t mean that they understand why, or that they understand everything that they need to know to be successful with SEO. There are some little known secrets that people need to pay attention to.

How often you use a keyword on your page is certainly something that you want to focus on. If you don’t know what keywords people are searching for when they find your page, find out. Then, make sure you continue to use those and related keywords.

Also, search engines look at the first paragraph and the last one, so keywords that are vital to your success need to be there. Don’t get spammy with them. They should come naturally in the sentences that you write, and they should be in each paragraph at least once. If you also put them in the meta tag, make sure that they are in the alt tag of an image that you put on the page, and put them in the title of your article as well as the body, you’ll be well on your way to complete SEO optimization.

SEO hasn’t gone away just because the economy is struggling. People are still spending some money, and you want them to spend it with your company, which is why your SEO is out there in the first place.

If you’re doing SEO for the holidays, you need to make sure that you get your keywords in order. Words like Christmas, Chanuka and other holidays are important. So is the word ‘gift.’ People search for those kinds of words, so put them in your SEO. You can find creative ways to do that or hire someone to do it for you, but you need to get the word out early and often, and make sure that if you give details about holidays, you get them correct. If you don’t it can really harm your credibility and how much money you might make from the traffic that you get to your site.

Driving traffic to your site is the point of SEO, but what people do once they get there will have a lot to do with whether you have good information for them, so make sure your holiday SEO is interesting and informative.

Social networking is becoming the next big thing for businesses as well as for people, but if you don’t know what you’re doing with it you could end up with a problem. That’s because a lot of people take their social networking very seriously, and there are also people out there who aren’t the most honest individuals that you could ever meet.

In order to use social networking effectively you’ll need to exercise some common sense. First, you shouldn’t put anything on your site, anywhere, that you wouldn’t want a potential employer or a potential customer to see. It’s ok if you have some weird hobbies or if you like to party on the weekends – just keep that information to yourself and off of the Internet.

You want to set a good impression, and sometimes you have to keep things off of your profile in order to do that. That doesn’t mean that you should lie, because employers and customers don’t like that, but you have to watch what information you offer to others.

If you have a new business or a new product, or if your business has done or is doing or is about to do something new, you’ll want people to know about it. The best way to do that and to reach the largest number of people is through a press release.

The best way to make sure that the press release is effective and does what you want it to is to make sure that it’s SEO friendly. If you don’t have any phrases in there that people search for when looking for your product or company, people might completely overlook your press release and the amazing things that you’re doing. You obviously don’t want that to happen because you paid for the press release, so having SEO embedded into it is a good choice. You can essentially kill two birds with one stone that way, and it will make your advertising dollar go a lot farther.

In today’s struggling economy, that could be very important for your business and its continued success.

With the holidays coming, you might want to be getting your SEO ready. If you aren’t sure about what that means, consider this: around the holidays, people are going to start looking for gifts and decorations. If you don’t have anything to offer them they won’t be coming to your site very much. If you have something to offer them, you have to make sure that they know it.

The best way to do that is to make sure that your SEO is set up with a lot of holiday words and phrases. The names of the holidays, words like ‘gift’ and ‘present’ and other common holiday-time phrases are important for SEO around this time of year, and it helps to ensure that people who are looking for gifts will keep visiting your site to see what you have to offer.

Without any holiday SEO your business might go down around this time of year because people aren’t searching specifically for what you have to offer. Make sure that people still know that you have a lot to offer them in their gift giving.

If you want different ways to search, you need to get away from Google. That search engine is what most people think of, and what most of them use, but it’s not the only one out there. There are many others, but they just don’t have the market share that Google has managed to acquire.

However, they search differently than Google does, and some people don’t care for that. Many of them have incomplete directories, and they can also be quite far off the market. However, for some kinds of searches they actually work better because of the different opportunities to find search results. There are also copyright, censorship, and privacy issues that Google is starting to struggle with, and it makes people stop and consider doing things a bit differently.

The newest thing is query reprocessing. This actually requires logical analysis so that the intentions of the searcher are actually determined. It sounds like a good idea but can be difficult to implement. Improvements are being made, though, so it could be the next big thing.

It’s no secret that more and more people are ‘going green.’ They want to take good care of their planet and their environment, but recycling isn’t always good. When it comes to ideas, recycling can be very bad, and nowhere is this more true than in the area of SEO.

People have lots of good ideas when it comes to what they should do on the Web and how they can teach you to make money doing the same thing. Unfortunately, the market has become so saturated with these kinds of people that it’s to the point where no one’s doing that well and nobody else can get into the market. There’s too much competition and everything has overflowed so badly that there aren’t any new niches for people who want to get out there. So they just start recycling everything that’s out there and trying to put their own spin on it.

It doesn’t often work well, and without a great new slant there’s little you can do. You have to be an innovator instead.

That’s a good question. With more and more domains being bought up and just held onto, there can be a lot in a name.

You want the Website name to promote who you are and what you do. Or your product. Or your service. Or whatever you’re trying to convey to others. You also want it to be short enough that people don’t get a cramp typing it in, and you want to make sure that it’s catchy. People should remember the name and not associate it with anything but you. If it’s too close to a competitor’s name there can be a lot of confusion. You should also research it and make sure that it doesn’t come too close to something political, religious, or pornographic. That can lead people down the wrong path very quickly, and you want to avoid that.

There’s a lot in a name, so you’ll want to choose yours carefully, and there are a lot of places where you can purchase your domain name, so be sure to shop around for what you need and want.

I probably don’t need to tell you how valuable widgets and sidebars are to a site’s page views and general traffic.

What you may not be aware of, however, is how golden they are for SEOs!

Let’s take a quick look at some effective uses of these features on well-known sites:

1)	Yahoo! News. Yahoo! News features an entire page of ‘most popular’ stories, which is obviously popular with many. But the lack of a similar widget decreases the chances of pulling someone away from the current page to send them off to another.

2)	Slate.com. A widget that displays both ‘most emailed’ and ‘most read’ which, I assume, measures standard page views.

3)	Newsweek.com. This one is pretty ingenious. Not only does this site combine Slate.com’s feature of ‘most emailed’ and ‘most viewed’, it also allows you to post to your own website. It also provides a time scale that shows which story is most popular as little as 12 hours ago.

4)	NYTimes.com. We have a winner! This gem has a three-tab system that that shows the ‘most-emailed’ and ‘most searched’, it also shows which stories has been blogged the most! Talk about pandering to bloggers!

These features give SEOs the opportunity to know their audience more effectively, earn links to the site, and can benefit your site’s rankings in news searches.

There is more than one way to accomplish the goal of ranking well. A concise, straight to the point site, can do very well. TeenModelStar.com is a site with few pages, but seems to be a top ranked site for terms such as teen model. The lesson here is: keep it simple, if simple is all that your visitors require.

Many of us refer to search engines, in order to find what we’re looking for on the web. Sometimes, the results that come back aren’t exactly what we expect. So who is to blame? The search engine, or the webmaster who unknowingly makes their site more difficult to find? In a sense, both parties could take the blame. This time, we’ll focus our attention on the webmaster.

The reason why so many webmasters fail with their SEO efforts is because they optimize with too much of their industry in mind, rather than the average consumer they are trying to attract. They incorporate keywords that are familiar to them, but foreign to the average web surfer. In this instance, all of that vast knowledge backfires, as the overuse of technical jargon buries them deep within the search engine.

To make the most out of your SEO campaign, you should stick to keywords your potential audience is more likely to reference. This practice involves learning how to back away from the business aspect, by bringing yourself down to the customer’s level and language. Sure, it’s your business, but it might not exist too long, if nobody can find it.

While combing the web, searching for ways to drive more traffic to your site, you are sure to run across several advertisements making SEO promises. These companies often state that their services will get you listed at the top of Google, in as little as seven days. Others make the claim of boosting your rankings, by submitting your website to hundreds of directories on the web. Of course, all of this comes at a price; one that is equivalent to throwing your money right out the window.

The truth is that most SEO services end up doing more harm than good in the long run. Those so called experts, claiming that submitting your site on a weekly basis, are blowing nothing more than smoke. The best way to boost rankings is to make your site search engine friendly, with relative keywords and inbound links. If the content is relative to what people are looking for, the search engine spiders will come crawling.

SEO is challenging, but it can be achieved on your own. However, there is no way to purchase a spot at the top, regardless of what the experts tell you.

If you have Adsense income, you have probably noticed that you’re not getting rich off of it. Some of that might be because you aren’t getting enough traffic to your site. If you have a lot of people coming to your site, your Adsense revenue will rise.

The way to get more people to your site is to ensure that you’re name is getting out there. Social marketing is a great way to do that because you can market yourself by writing great content and then other people can market you because they like what you have to say. And it won’t cost you anything extra for that ‘marketing’ on the social bookmarking sites.

It’s a great way to get your information out there and bring people to your site, and it also works well at ensuring that more people click on the links that you have available on your site for Adsense, bringing you more profit.

If you want to get more traffic to your Website, one of the best ways to do it is through the use of social bookmarking sites. There are many of these sites available now, and there seems to be more and more each day. Because of that, getting onto all of them can be an impossible – or at least an arduous – task. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t get onto as many of them as possible.

If you link to them and make it easier for people to bookmark your site, there’s a higher chance that they’ll do so. The more people do this, the better ranking your site will get and the better chance you’ll have of getting more links, more traffic, and more sales.

It takes time and patience and persistence to build traffic this way but it can be done, and once it gets moving it will take on a life of its own.

SEO companies often have a code of ethics that they live by, or at least one that they say they live by. They started the code because many companies, in the past, acquired very bad reputations. They were spammers, a lot of them, and they didn’t care about the quality of the writing. All they cared about was providing a lot of keywords in a very small space, so that the search engines would pick them up. The quality of the actual work wasn’t an important issue.

Changes have been made to the industry in recent years, however, because SEO companies have realized that people are demanding more and more of their Internet experience. The code of ethics that some people put on their SEO company sites used to be a luxury.

Now they are becoming a necessity, because of the requirements of Websites that contract with SEO companies.

Do You Really Need a CMS?

A lot of that depends on whether you have a Website with enough content on it to warrant one. A CMS is a content management system and people who have a lot of content on their Website often want one, because things become too confusing otherwise.

For sites that are only a few pages of text and images, a CMS would be an unnecessary option that would be extremely stressful and wouldn’t serve its intended purpose very well. If you have a site that has a lot of pages, plus a lot of sections, and if that site is updated very frequently, then it’s much more likely that you’ll need a CMS to keep track of everything that you’re doing.

Some large sites may have hundreds or even thousands of pages when it comes to product descriptions and other information, so not having a CMS would make the work of the person designated to update that site nearly an impossible task. If you have a site that stores lots of content, make sure you get a CMS, so that you won’t have to spend every waking moment trying to update your site.

There has been a lot of talk lately that Google doesn’t really matter anymore when it comes to page rankings and that there are better ways to do things. There are certainly different ways to do things, but that doesn’t mean that they are better than the traditional page ranking systems that Google employs.

People used to be willing to look through a few pages of search results, so that they could find what they wanted, but anymore they only want to look through the top few results. If you aren’t in the top three or so, you might not even be noticed at all. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that you keep your SEO strong and keep those search rankings up there.

You can do other things to help customers notice you as well and there are some other options you can explore to make sure that other search engines find you, but your Google rank should be a priority for you.

Social bookmarking is the process of tagging and storing a website so it can be accessed at a later time. Instead of saving it to your browser like a traditional bookmark, you are saving it to the web. Because they are stored online, social bookmarks can be shared with friends and make great marketing tools as well.

For a website with abundant content, adding social bookmark invitations to pages and other media can lead to strategies that leverage volumes of traffic along with points of visitor contact. The momentum of thousands of web pages, each with an open invitation to share, has the ability to drive in links and traffic 24/7.

There are a number of social bookmarking tools strictly designed for online marketing. SocialPoster.com provides an environment where its easy to submit news and link submissions in various industries. They also use a frames option that is very helpful at submitting links faster and keeping your submissions unique.

Let’s clear up some misconceptions about reciprocal linking.

1. Words like “diminished results” and “carry less weight” do NOT mean reciprocal links are worthless.
2. Reciprocal links WILL positively affect your rankings.
3. If you give a reciprocal link and the other web master removes the link – you haven’t damned your site to hell. It’s fine, doesn’t hurt a thing. You should remove the link, simply because your link partner has broken the trust – but you don’t have to watch your links daily or even monthly.
4. Reciprocal links (especially blog roll links) can generate traffic in their own right. Let’s not forget, bringing people to your site is the goal! If you have an opportunity to increase your traffic, exposure, or brand — take it! Never pass up an opportunity just because you think the search engines would disapprove.

Finally: Don’t be stingy. Give links generously. Credit your sources with a link. Provide valuable links for your visitors. This will help, not hurt your SEO efforts.

1. The high keyword density style – Debuting back in the 90’s, this ineffective style has been known to still exist in recessed areas of the web, safe from the top 10 and buried at least 5 pages deep on most search engines.

2. The anchor text at the bottom of the page SEO technique – This can be effective, but it’s often overdone with excessive linking and becomes more of a hindrance than a help.

3. The old school reciprocal link cover letter and close SEO technique - Reciprocal linking can help, but many people get crazy with it, asking for link exchanges with sites they know nothing about. Why trade links with someone if they’re only going to have them removed one week later?

4. The Keyword Stuffing Pipes in the Title SEO technique – Keyword Stuffing | Even more Keywords | Even more Ridiculous Stuffing | Company | Services | City | State | Birth Date | SSN | Address | Location of First Kiss with Girlfriend|, etc. you get the point. Search engines will almost never reward this type.

5. The submit your site to 5000 directories and 1,000 search engines SEO technique – It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to submit to a bunch of directories and search engines that don’t get any traffic. Stop wasting your time on these niche sites and focus on optimizing your stuff for the big boys (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.)

Competitive research is, hands down, one of the most important processes in search engine optimization. It involves studying websites that are ranking for your targeted keywords in order to improving your rankings. When you begin an SEO project, you need to determine your goals in terms of content and links.

In order to beat the competition, you first need to be playing on the same field. As you work on optimizing your site, competitive analysis allows you retain your competitive edge and keep on top of your competitors. Getting to the top is only half the battle, staying there is much tougher.

You must understand why your competition ranks well and find out how your site matches up. This will help you set goals for coming up with additional content and your link campaign. Each keyword and industry can be extremely different so make sure to understand which sites are ranking well for your major keywords.

The most common mistake that those new to SEO make is assuming a site’s ranking is due to only one factor. There are literally over 100 components to Google’s algorithm; many different factors come into play when a site is ranking well. Several elements that otherwise would not carry much weight become tie-breakers.

Remember: the top ranking goes to the site that is least imperfect.

Linkbait refers to content on a web page that is specifically designed to attract inbound links from other sites. Some view the term as if it performs a malicious action while others agree that it actively reflects its purpose. Several websites currently participate in linkbaiting as it proves quite beneficial in building traffic and better search engine optimization.

There are essentially two types of linkbait: positive linkbait and negative linkbait. Positive linkbait could offer incentives for your audience such as a contest or something merely intriguing or informative. This type of linkbait normally redirects visitors to interactive applications. Negative linkbait tends to deal with contentious content that is both controversial and informative. This can be a highly effective strategy though it is often looked down upon by some.

The use of linkbait can be quite advantageous over the long run. It’s an efficient tool that can help you move up in the rankings and turn conversions on your site. At the same time, you must take caution whenever attempting to increase your links. Search engines examine popularity and authority so in their eyes, not all links are good links.

SEO myths seem to multiple each year. Some are based on reality while others are just uninformed misconceptions. Here are five of the most common SEO myths:

#1 – Your URL must be submitted - this may have been true once, but search engine submissions currently have no relevance.

#2 – You need Google Sitemap to rank in Google - this tool is not needed when your site is properly designed with relevant keywords and quality links.

#3 – PPC campaigns will increase or lower rankings – some believe that using Google AdWords will boost Google rankings while others believe it will bring them down. The truth is that such campaigns play no factor in any search engine.

#4 – SEO copy must be at least 250 words in length – Not true. Whether it’s a 250 word product description or a 500 word landing page, your site can rank well with the use of relative keywords and phrases.

#5 – Buying links will get you disqualified – there is actually some truth to this myth. Search engines may not count paid links as votes but often can’t determine whether they were paid for or not. You should know that buying links will not necessarily place you atop the rankings.

Contrary to what you may have heard, no SEO expert can guarantee top ten placement in any search engine, especially when merely relying on keywords. This is all a marketing strategy employed by so-called SEO specialists to get your hard earned dollars.

In fact, no honest business would even take on a client insisting that one or two common phrases will lead them to the top of the rankings. Its important to know that search engines base rankings on genuine content which includes link popularity and the proper use of relevant terms.

The best way to rank well in a search engine is to build your pages with the appropriate architecture and provide your visitors with quality content whether it’s a product, service or valuable information. While they may advance momentarily, those stuffing keywords into their pages or purchasing links never stay at the top for long.

Cheaters never win, even at SEO

So before you purchase service with that all-knowing specialist, consider this – there are no guarantees in SEO. You can save a few bucks and achieve a quality ranking by learning how to properly build and market your site.

Some would lead you to believe that succeeding at SEO requires a Masters degree. After all, there are a number of companies that charge a hefty fee for this service. While there is a steep learning curve, the key to SEO is actually quite simple.

SEO consist of various elements but keywords may be the most essential. Keywords should be thoroughly researched and cater to your niche audience. The content of your web pages should reflect keywords that appeal to visitors and the search engines. Search engine spiders crawl through the internet in search of fresh, relevant anchor text. Implementing no keywords or irrelevant text will lead to irrelevant viewers and have your site listed on the back pages of a search engine.

Keywords should be fused into all descriptive areas of your site. This includes articles or blog posts, title tags, product descriptions and metadata. You can take SEO one step further by implementing keywords and phrases into your URL.

There is so much more to SEO , but keywords are the easiest place to start and one of the most important factors. Properly implementing them into your site can lead to instant improvements in your rankings.

Though often neglected, the title tag is one of the most essential factors in search engine optimization. In fact, a quick and simple adjustment to a title tag is sometimes enough to considerably increase your rankings in a search engine. Because the title tag is what appears as the clickable link in the results page of a search engine, properly labeling it is likely to give you more click-throughs as well.

Just like the content of your pages, title tags should contain relative keywords. This could be a company name, product or whatever that particular page pertains to. If your business is already established and well known on the web, including a company name to the title tag is essential. If you’re attempting to establish a web presence, this creates a tremendous opportunity to do so.

Tools

The importance of title tags and SEO in general has resulted in the development of several tools that will help you to easily implement the appropriate keywords and phrases. Many popular content management systems and blogging engines include comprehensive features that allow you to easily customize your title tags. SEO Title Tag is one such plug-in that is recommended for the WordPress blogging software.

Fusing keywords into your landing page is essential, properly labeling your metadata is critical, but the title tag is and will always be one of the most important factors in regard to receiving high search engine rankings for your web pages.

It’s no secret that comments are important. Bloggers like to get comments because they feel that it means people care about what they have to say.

They feel connected to others when their posts are commented on, and they are encouraged to keep writing and working toward building a strong readership base. Not everyone will be overly successful on their blog, but comments can help a blogger gauge how well he or she is doing.

Are there readers? Do they have an interest in what you’re saying? If not, why not? You might have to change your focus to go along with what society is looking for if you want people to keep commenting on your blog.

You might also have to find your niche and let people who are already in that niche know you’re around. If they haven’t found you they can’t read what you have to say. Once they read your words and start commenting you’ll be encouraged to write more and they’ll be encouraged to tell others.

Even though Google says that they talk about their ranking philosophy, some of it can still be confusing and there’s no real way to know if the company’s providing all the details or only a portion of what they actually do.

Originally they said that they had hundreds of reviewers who would make determinations as to how sites should be ranked, and that was how your Website got to the top (or the bottom) of the list. Now, they share more information about the algorithm that they use to produce the results that you get when you search for something – but they don’t really give the details.

Google doesn’t always return good results, either, and the company sees those times as a reason to adjust their algorithms and keep working to ensure that people get what they need when they search.

The company can’t give the specifics behind what they do and how they do it, though, or every search engine out there would be copying them. Despite the problems that they sometimes have with searches they’re still seen as being one of the best and most accurate search engines out there.

Viral-Buzz-Baiting (as the name implies) is a mash-up of several powerful internet marketing techniques. Viral Marketing, Buzz Marketing, and Link Baiting combine to form this search engine optimization / internet marketing strategy.

The following is a day-by-day example of the promotion in action. I’ve skipped the ‘creation of content’ step and moved directly to publishing and promoting.

Day 1

Content published by 6 pm. Promotion through contacts begins. Pushing the content requires constant attention. It’s impossible to guarantee success but hard work and valuable contacts always help. It’s a long sleepless night with lots of caffeine.

Day 2

Promotion of content through network continues until the early afternoon. By 3 pm all resources have been exhausted and the buzz / link baiting nature of the content is left to stand on it’s own. Visitors are compounding hourly. Finally time to take a break!

Day 3

The content has been republished on social networks by complete strangers. Visitors per hour peaks around 5 pm. The campaign is a huge success. It’s not possible to predict how much traffic a campaign like this will generate, but we are always happy with anything over 5000 visitors. This campaign has already resulted in 30,000 visitors.

Day 4

Direct visitors and search engine traffic now account for a large portion of the traffic. The site is ranking page 1 for all searches associated with the content.

Day 5

Traffic is trending slightly up again. Mostly due to direct visitors. Likely cause: email to friends. Usually traffic tapers off by Day 5.

The traffic and links generated rarely have instant sales potential. For a concept to “go viral” it must appeal to a large audience and particularly to opinion makers and trendsetters. Trendsetters do not usually “buzz” about commercial products. The concept here is to give something away, and gain an audience.

The true value comes from attracting people and links to your site. Success results in a lasting flow of traffic and recognition from the search engines. It’s also been our experience that the search engines like to ‘follow a leader’ – once you’ve had a successful viral-buzz-baiting event, your content from that point forward gets unique attention.

What does it cost? From start to finish this internet marketing technique often requires close to 80 hours of work. In addition it is necessary to enlist the help of other internet marketers that will call in the favors in the future. Pricing will vary depending on the nature of the site being promoted and the ideal content for that site. At a minimum you’ll need a marketing budget of a few thousand dollars to implement this strategy.

The long term lasting effects of a successful viral-buzz-baiting campaign are a competitive advantage to your business. Once you have the ability to command an audience to your site, the web becomes a much friendlier place.

This technique is one of the many powerful SEO strategies the Bloom SEO Company can use to benefit your online marketing campaign.

There’s one person you can always turn to who will give you a front page link that has any text you want. That person is you! This is the network SEO strategy. Why buy one site when you can buy 20? Domains are dirt cheap. Buy a bunch with industry related keywords in the URL. Write a few articles, add a few videos, maybe even install a blog. Build a few links to each one, then let them age some.

Soon you’ll have 20 domains you control that are all within the niche your primary site is in. Now write a nice post on the front page of all of them. You just landed 20 of the highest quality links possible. A glowing review, a great link with the keywords you want.

SEO professionals have been using this technique for years. If you would prefer to have your SEO campaign professionally managed, start by getting your FREE SEO Report.

Finding relevant sites that will place your link is essential. Ideally you’ll want to create a database or spreadsheet with sites related to your industry. Then sort the sites by PR and take out any duplicate sites in your list. Start at the top and work your way through them.

How do you find relevant sites that will provide links? Good question. Do a search on the top search engines for your keyword, plus some of the most common terms found on link pages. Here’s an example: Insert Keyword Here “add site”

Besides “add site”, here are some other common terms: add link, submit url, submit site, submit link, add website, add web site, suggest link, suggest site, suggest url, favorite sites, favorite links, favorite websites, reciprocal, link exchange, and many others. This list should get your started.

Be sure to keep track of which sites you’ve contacted. You don’t want to annoy or spam other site owners. Stay organized.

In early 2007 Google made changes designed to prevent Google Bombs from working. A Google Bomb is an abundance of anchor text links pushing a message unrelated to the web site’s actual content. Past Google Bombs have included the searches: “more evil than Satan himself” which brought up the homepage for Microsoft. “miserable failure” or “failure” bought up the official George W. Bush biography. “liar” leading to Tony Blair.

And now, “Dangerous Cult” is returning The Church of Scientology as the #1 result.

The Google Bomb is a clear example of what Google measures to rank web sites.

It’s unlikely that The Church of Scientology has pages optimized for “Dangerous Cult”, and yet, they are ranking #1 for this term today. Someone (the group known as Anonymous) has created a large number of anchor text links and pointed them at Scientology.org.

On the page itself, there is no mention of “Dangerous Cult”. However, the word “Dangerous” is on the page. “Cult” is not. Google’s algorithm decided the incoming links justified placing Scientology.org in the #1 spot. It appears anchor text not only outweighs content, but can still take the place of it!

* Use the powerful information with caution. It’s highly recommended that you use a professional seo company to run your online marketing campaign.

Google emerged as the preeminent search engine early on, perhaps as soon as 1998. Slowly but surely, users recognized the value of Google’s search results. Yahoo floundered, MSN joined late in the game. And now, Google commands the search engine industry with over 50% of the total market:

[TABLE=4]

Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and Ask share 40% of the total searches, while Google holds over 25% more market share than those 4 top search engines combined!

The difference between BloomSEO and other SEO firms stems from the very beginning. While most Search Engine Consultants typically come from web development, or web design – our beginning was much different.

Most firms learn to do SEO due to demand. Web development companies are asked by their clients to “get my site in Google”. The web developers and designers looked up the conventional techniques and applied them to their customer’s web sites. Some of these techniques work pretty well, some are wasted effort (and dollars). For a web developer, learning the difference was never a matter of urgency. While getting the job done, was urgent – they were being paid to do the job, not learn how to maximize results and cut inefficiencies. In addition, they weren’t being paid to test the newest techniques or to experiment with original SEO concepts.

For the first 6 years we at BloomSEO only worked on our own sites. We earned our living exclusively online and we learned search engine optimization out of necessity. If we didn’t generate more traffic from our efforts, then our efforts were wasted. We quickly learned what worked, what didn’t, and what likely directions to follow to avoid wasting time on outdated techniques or misinformation.

For us, concrete results is the mission. It didn’t occur to us that our approach was different until we were asked for advice from friends and family looking to hire a web design firm. Once we realized we had a unique service to offer, BloomSEO was born.

Now is a crucial time for local businesses. Search Engine Optimization on the national level has gotten very difficult to enter a new, or newly promoted website into the top keyword rankings. For instance, it took us 12 months to rank top 10 for a valuable weight loss term. This same level of competition is already hitting local markets.

If you do a Google search for your industry, chances are you will get millions of results. All of them are competing for the coveted top 10 spots. Now, add your city to the search (example: Richmond Virginia Real Estate Attorney) – chances are you are seeing competition there as well. It’s only going to get worse. The longer you wait to begin a SEO campaign, the more difficult, costly, and time consuming the work will become.

Wait too long, and you have given the web to your competition. For some industries (Real Estate, Law, and Elective Medical Procedures) it is already highly difficult to rank your web site in the top 10. It doesn’t matter what your industry is. The longer you wait, the more time your competition will have to get a foothold.
